Pecos Diamonds, also known as Pecos Valley Diamonds or Pecos Quartz are colorful, doubly terminated quartz crystals that occur in scattered outcrops of the Permian Seven Rivers Formation (permian) along the Pecos River valley in southeastern New Mexico. Pecos valley diamonds are unique for their size, variable color, and crystal morphologies. Pecos Diamonds are formed inside of gypsum. Now and then the gypsum crumbles away, exposing the”diamonds”.
Pecos diamonds take on a wide range of colors. Perfectly transparent crystals are usually less than 4mm long. Larger crystals take on the color of the gypsum matrix. Opaque crystals are milky white, light to dark gray, red, pink, yellow, orange, light to dark hematite red to brown, and light to nearly black magenta. Translucent crystals tend to be white, white with pink or orange streaks, or light to medium honey brown. Nearly transparent crystals contain cloudy gypsum inclusion along with black material inclusions wich could possibly be hydrocarbon. Some crystals show color zonation. Some very large crystals are varigated creamy gray green with pink points.
One of the distinguishing features of Pecos valley diamonds when compared to other occurrences of authigenic quartz is the great variation in crystal forms, Pseudotrigonal Prisms, Pseudotrigonal Pyramids, Prismatic, Quartzoid, Pseudocubic.

Metaphysical Aspects:
